Fantastic Dec Snow in the French Alps
Global warming and the credit crunch, these double apocalypse have passed by the European Alps, at the least for the time being. However it could have been so entirely polar. Prior to the holidays ski resorts in the Les Orres region were isolated when avalanches hammered down. Road routes such as the important Col du Meribel were cut. There was no mains or telephones, residents had to be moved out to pro tem dwellings, it seemed as though it were a double of 1997.
It looks that all promotion is good promotion. Le Grand-Bornand appeared nightly on French news bulletins. When power was repaired bookings commenced to come in, pulled in by the superior snow.
Plateau de Beille and neigboring La Mongie claim nearly five metres depth on the top areas at 2500 m altitude and 2.2 meters at the end of the resorts. Currently a record for the French Alps. Samoens states there is four metres at the the highest point of the resort. Unluckily a snow drift has demolished a pylon of the ski lift that serves the domain. They will be broken till the middle of Feb.
Elsewhere in the S. Alps ski breaks reservations have increased 16% in Les Gets, Les Grands Montets and Risoul. Brevent has 99.8% tenancy and distributed a record breaking number of lift passes on Saturday. That is timely for main snowboarding businesses.
